George Town Interim Planning Scheme amendment is passed

Today an amendment to the George Town Interim Planning Scheme takes effects which will allow Low Head Wind Farm Pty Ltd to once again submit a wind farm Development Application (DA) to George Town Council for assessment.

For reference, when the Low Head Wind Farm was proposed prior to September 2013 the Rural Resource Zone clearly allowed Council to accept a DA for a wind farm, to be assessed as a discretionary activity. When the interim scheme was issued in September 2013, the wording for these zones was modified and, despite the Local and State government’s clear support for wind farm development in northeast Tasmania, was interpreted as prohibiting any development over 12m in height – an obvious error. Low Head Wind Farm Pty Ltd has spent the last 15 months working with Council and the Tasmanian Planning Commission to correct this error, and provide a clear pathway to accept submission of our completed wind farm DA.

The incoming State Planning Scheme (to be introduced over the next year) has already corrected this error with explicit wording around renewable energy in this type of zone, so a scheme amendment for future developments anywhere in Tasmania will not be necessary again.

This has been a long and expensive journey for the company, however we are pleased to have achieved this result with George Town Council and the Tasmanian Planning Commission, and look forward to immediately submitting our wind farm DA for public consultation and assessment.
